Governor Ige has created thousands of affordable homes, including rentals, to address the needs of those entering the workforce.

  • Creating and improving housing options.Committed to renovating the state’s housing facilities, we are now on-track to build 10,000 units by 2020. So far, approximately 5,300 units have been built since Governor Ige took office, with 40% of those being affordable, and another 5,900 units are under construction or in the planning stages.
  • Giving homeless families places to live. Engaged in a public-private partnership with Duane Kurisu, aio Foundation, and the City & County of Honolulu to develop Kahauiki Village to develop long-term and permanent affordable housing for homeless families.
  • Revitalizing our community. Fulfilled a promise to “revitalize Kalihi” by working with a community vision team and completing the Kalihi 21st Century Transformation Initiative.
  • Ensuring senior housing affordability. Allocated rental assistance funds for tenants at Na Lei Hulu Kupuna Senior Residence in Kakaʻako, ensuring the project will remain affordable for the next 60 years.
  • Fighting for affordable housing.Worked with the State Legislature to add $150 million to the state’s affordable housing accounts managed by Hawaiʻi Housing Finance & Development Corporation to produce affordable workforce housing.
  • Providing accessible communities. Identified state lands near rail transit stations for future housing, employment centers, daycare, senior centers, and community facilities that will provide a sense of community and ease of accessibility.
  • Helping institute a ‘Housing First’ policy. Focused on moving homeless into transitional and permanent housing.
  • Completing the Family Assessment Center in Kakaʻako. With the goal to move homeless families into permanent, stable housing in 90 days.
  • Making housing affordable on the neighbor islands. Passed legislation that preserves affordable housing rentals on Maui.
  • Increasing renting options for formerly homeless families. Hosted ‘Landlord Summits’ to encourage and increase the number of rentals to families who are transitioning out of homelessness.
